چکیده

Introduction Hypertension puts continuous strain on arteries, resulting in arterial wall alterations such as vessel wall thickening and vessel wall stiffening. Due to the availability of suitable acoustic windows, vessel wall thickness (VWT) is studied traditionally by ultrasound from intima-media thickness in the carotid arteries. Arterial vessel wall stiffness can be expressed by Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV), the propagation speed of the systolic wave front through the aorta. For studying direct associations between PWV and VWT, it is desired to sample VWT in the aorta.

Site-specific coupling between aortic pulse wave velocity, carotid vessel wall thickness and peripheral stenosis severity in peripheral arterial occlusive disease at 3T MRI

Background Arterial wall stiffening and thickening are part of the atherosclerosis process leading to luminal narrowing. A close link between distal aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) and peripheral vascular disease, reflecting sitespecific relationship between local plaque burden and vascular disease, is hypothesized. Purpose of this study was to compare peripheral arterial stenosis severity on ...

Cerebrovascular Damage Mediates Relations Between Aortic Stiffness and Memory.

Aortic stiffness is associated with cognitive decline. Here, we examined the association between carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and cognitive function and investigated whether cerebrovascular remodeling and parenchymal small vessel disease damage mediate the relation. Analyses were based on 1820 (60% women) participants in the Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility-Reykjavik Study. Multivari...

Association between aortic stiffness, carotid vessel wall thickness and stenosis severity in peripheral arterial occlusive disease: a comprehensive MRI study

Background In atherosclerosis, arterial wall thickening and stiffening precede luminal narrowing. MRI is well-validated for imaging vessel wall thickness (VWT) and stiffness expressed in pulse wave velocity (PWV, defined as the propagation speed of the pressure or flow wave through the aorta). Contrast-enhanced MR angiography (CEMRA) has evolved into a reliable tool for stenosis detection in pe...

Leveling of arterial wall stiffness between aortic arch and left carotid artery due to aging is associated with reduced volume flow towards the brain: pulse wave velocity evaluation with high-field velocity-encoded MRI

Background A discrete transition of wall stiffness at the interface of a compliant aorta and stiffer carotid arteries creates a reflection site for the aortic pulse wave and consequently limits excessive pulsatile energy transmission towards the brain. Arterial wall stiffness can be expressed by the pulse wave velocity (PWV) and dualslice one-directional through-plane velocity-encoded (VE) MRI ...

Differential effects of nebivolol and metoprolol on central aortic pressure and left ventricular wall thickness.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the vasodilating β-blocker nebivolol and the cardioselective β-blocker metoprolol succinate on aortic blood pressure and left ventricular wall thickness. We conducted a randomized, double-blind study on 80 hypertensive patients. The patients received either 5 mg of nebivolol or 50 to 100 mg of metoprolol succinate daily for 1 year. Their h...
